Some Photos and a Zine
In October, I started participating in a project called Nourish and Flourish - We’re in a Pickle!
This project was curated by fellow artist and curator Fauziya Johnson.
Across the span of a few weeks, we discussed the difficulty of “ethical” consumption and how mass production is a huge killer of ecosystems and communities, namely in the Amazon Rainforest. We made a trip out to Crosby Beach to witness first-hand the colossal soybean imports making their way to the shore. It was harrowing to see such a thing, knowing how much death and destruction was behind it.
Reflecting on the sessions, I thought about how interlinked deforestation, racism, slavery, and capitalism are; I was moved to make something to reflect on my experience, using found objects and recycled materials only, acting as a direct parallel of all we discussed.
We will continue to fight the good fight in favour of the people and not profits.
Here we all are, standing next to one of Antony Gormley’s statues from his ‘Another Place’ series.
A quick stop for lunch, just before we would venture onto the sands and have an open conversation about soybean imports, our community in the West, and how the Global South is impacted.
